As a proud girl dad, I feel it's my mission to explore the potential for my team in the foot and ankle realm. Women are the backbone of the U.S., making up around 51% of the population and nearly half of the workforce.
Gender trends in enrollment: MD and DPM are similar
In 2024, women represented 55.4% of first-year students in U.S. medical schools (MDs) and accounted for 52% of incoming students in doctor of podiatry (DPM) programs.
Seems orthopedics is the problem – not foot and ankle
However, a startling 2019 survey by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery revealed that only 6.5% of orthopedic surgeons are women. Additionally, since 1999, women have only made up 17% of fellows in the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society.
