In their meta-analysis, Johns et al. discovered that athletes who experienced achilles tendon (AT) rupture had a significantly lower rate of return to play in the NBA and NFL compared to athletes recovering from ACL injuries, meniscus injuries, and ankle fractures.
Time lines for AT
After suffering an Achilles tendon injury, athletes were able to resume professional sports participation 76% of the time. On average, it took them 11 months to return to play. However, these athletes experienced a decline in player efficiency ratings, power ratings, and sport- and position-specific statistics in the NFL, NBA, and professional soccer leagues when compared to noninjured controls.
