Despite advancements in modern medicine, naviculocuneiform (NC) fusions still report a 27% non-union rate.
Medial isn’t enough
In a study of 110 NC fusions, 27% (30 cases) showed radiographic non-union, with 50% (17 cases) of these patients experiencing symptoms. Notably, isolated medial pole NC fusions had a significantly higher non-union rate compared to fusions involving multiple NC facets.
Surface area may be key
The anatomy of the NC join may explain the challenges with isolated medial pole NC fusions. The middle facet has a greater surface area, which can be advantageous. So, swing hard for maximum surface area contact in your NC fusions.
