Spontaneous osteonecrosis of the navicula, with its subsequent dorsal collapse and talonavicular arthritis, is a tough draw for an elite athlete. Nadal was diagnosed in 2005, the year of his first grand slam title. Injections, activity modifications, and 5 months off the tour in 2021, have all helped him, but the watch is on for when Mueller Weiss will force him to hang up his racquet.
