A recent retrospective review studied the use of the medial sesamoid, removed via the same incision, as an autograft in first metatasophalangeal (MTP) joint fusion. The study involved 107 patients, with 24 cases using the medial sesamoid as a graft.

Results:

  • A 100% fusion rate in the sesamoidectomy group.

  • A 92.1% overall fusion rate.

  • All sesamoidectomy patients were satisfied with their post-op outcomes.

Using a medial sesamoid autograft during first MTP arthrodesis is safe and effective, simplifying grafting in higher-risk patients or those avoiding an additional incision. This creative approach, supported by a single surgeon’s series, has the potential to avoid second site incision for bone graft.
