The use of technology in orthopedics is influenced by insurance status, location of care, physician preference, and patient factors. So, when a technology like nitinol gets a tailwind, it can be challenging to understand why, where, and how it is being used without surveying a diverse sample of the surgeon population.
Use of nitinol increase from 2022 to 2024
Foot and ankle surgeons have significantly increased their use of nitinol, with more than 95% of the population having used it in the in the past two years. The number of high-volume users, more than 10 implants per month, has tripled.
Indications for nitinol
Since 2022, midfoot fusion has been the most common indication and has remained stable. The biggest increase in use has occurred with MTP fusion, with 25% using nitinol in this indication.
